Why You Need A Podcast Description

Have you ever bought something from a store that had no ingredient label or a description of what you just bought or even instructions on how to use the item/product or at least a notice of what to expect? If not, how do you think you’d feel if you did? You may be confused, have questions, or even possibly hesitant to even buy in the first place or use the item if you had the opportunity to.

The same applies to your podcast and the description. After you select your podcast name and have created some podcast art you will typically need your podcast description by not if you do not already have it. Your podcast description is a synopsis of your show, it’s intended purpose and what to expect when you listen.

With a podcast show description will allow you to give your listeners another touch point to learn about your podcast before even listening to you. Believe it or not, your podcast description can even help you gain more listenership but the same is opposite. Poor descriptions can steer listeners away if it doesn’t make sense, too wordy or even bores them before they even listen.

Where to start?

Keep your description simple, excite your audience and be authentic. The most difficult part about writing a podcast description will  come when you yourself are uncertain about the goal and purpose of your show.

Are you trying to inspire? educate? or entertain? What  and who will you be discussing topics with? Is this a single host podcast, round table discussion or a co hosted show? Are you talking about politics, aliens, or just bantering with friends?

Your description shows key highlights on what makes your episode exciting or gives your potential listeners enough information to get them excited and want to listen.

The importance of your podcast description is very high, but should not be over thought. Simple descriptions that briefly describes your show and what to expect is more than okay. Do not force a description if it does not come naturally, if you are having a hard time coming up with a description. Ask yourself a couple of questions, what is the purpose and intention of my podcast? Who would be interested in listening? And what should listeners expect? You truly need to be authentic and know your podcasts purpose to make this as simple as possible.

Here is an example of a podcast description from one of our shows.

Noah Evans and Jeff Fawson are two young hustlers out of Boise Idaho, and owners of Tree City Home Buyers. They want to interview top sellers in the real estate industry, and pass on tips to its listeners. Curious about home buying, renovation, house flips, then this is the podcast for you!
